ASSISTERE IL BUIO, a public project in Siena
curated by Serena Fineschi

In the Project Cave of Palazzo delle Papesse, visitors will discover a geography of clues—fragments of thought and vision that inspired the artists’ interventions.
Seventeen artists for seventeen public lanterns.
Since the post-war era, Siena has been lit by lanterns with a medieval spirit. Crafted in wrought iron by master artisans, these silent watchmen have long illuminated the streets and alleys of the historic center. Guardians of the night, keepers of secrets and memory, they’ve become part of the city’s architectural and poetic identity—emotionally woven into Siena’s urban fabric.
“Assistere il buio” explores the relationship between light and shadow—eternal opposites. Here, darkness is no longer feared, but embraced. It becomes a space where light dares to enter, opening new and previously unseen paths. In this delicate balance, light assists the night, offering mutual support and rewriting the narrative of conflict between good and evil.
This public art project looks to the future, while honoring Siena’s cultural and historical roots. Seventeen contemporary artists have been invited to create permanent works in dialogue with seventeen of the city’s historic lanterns. A meeting of past and present, casting new light on the night—graceful epiphanies suspended in the air. More than just an art installation, Assistere il buio reimagines the city’s geography. It invites a slower, more intimate experience of Siena—away from the usual tourist routes. Searching for the artist lanterns means wandering through hidden alleys and overlooked corners, shifting direction, and discovering new perspectives.
Through the eyes of the artists, Assistere il buio reveals a different Siena—offering a deeper connection to the city’s urban space, and to its soul.
